I said back when the accident happened that we needed to see what the cause was and now we know. Uber decided to deactivate the emergency braking mode that is a feature of the Volvo SUV. This meant that the human driver would have to detect and brake in time before the accident. The other failure was in the software not able to accurately identify the pedestrian.

This was obviously a lack of judgement on the part of Uber and it cost a person their life. Even though reports of the victim being inebriated has surfaced, the fault clearly falls on Uber. Every effort should be made to include every bit of safety precaution during the testing of these autonomous vehicles. And Uber should not be able to continue on with this program until they can show that all safety measures have been taken.

What are you thoughts about this revelation about Uber’s autonomous vehicles?
