Alexa recorded a family’s conversation

It feels like every week I am writing about a person’s info being shared by a tech company without the person’s consent. Facebook dealt with it and now Amazon. As a customer reported their private conversation was recorded and emailed. A scary scenario as more homes are incorporating assistant devices.

A Portland, Oregon couple had their conversation recorded and sent to a friend in Seattle. Unfortunately this happened more than once for this couple as friends were able to recall their discussion about hardwood floors.

Again these are issues that cannot happen while society is on the verge of the IOT world. As convenient as it is to use our assistant devices to control out thermostats and lights, it is not worth it at the expense of our privacy.

Now this incident is likely because of a bug or a misunderstood word. I know I have had my Google Home Mini and my phone kick on after it thought it heard a hot word. So I am sure that was the case with Alexa. A solution is to require confirmation via phone, tablet, or computer to send an email or message to anyone.

What are any issues you encountered with your assistant devices kicking on unexpectedly?
